As we boldly gallop forward into the age of innovation it's hard to imagine that it was not so long ago that non-conformists bit their tongues as they were advised not to rock the boat.

But now the lid is off. Fresh, open-minded thinking is honoured and nourished. And here we are, in Waterloo Region, a centre of innovation and leadership where those with exciting ideas and drive are connecting with those of means who are eager to fund; where change enables change. Where innovation is sought in every corner of thought, then embraced with fervour to win favour in our world of many tribes. We are transforming from the fixed cube of traditional structure and proven systems thinking to the rolling sphere of open minded exploration of the possible.

We are lifted by a refreshing virtual wave that has raised the bar of expectations of humans everywhere; from the hubs of technology to the rims on the road to our future. Size no longer matters as people with like minds and a clear vision gather to collaborate, to create, to lead. Such is the culture of those at Cober Evolving Solutions who did such a fine printing of that which you hold. It's a similar culture that influences each of the successful enterprises in this 8th annual edition of Top Notch.

Look carefully at their images that were captured by the unique lens of Terry Scott White Photography. You can see their joy of accomplishment and imagine the passion they have for their chosen path; inspired to commit and to immerse themselves in initiatives that ensured they would stand apart.

This difference is explained well in a TED talk by Simon Sinek; a video on how great leaders inspire action. It's reportedly one of the most-viewed presentations of the amazing TED collection of thinkers. As I watched this profound yet simple talk explaining the very root of success I thought of the many local stories presented in Top Notch since 2005. The common thread, of course, is a personal belief and passion that each of these leaders has been able to instill in others; the infectious positive spirit that tackles all challenges with confidence. The answer to their `why` is their inner drive to make a difference.
